About the Faculty

Prof. Sudipta Maitra has been an esteemed faculty member in the Department of Zoology at Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, engaging in teaching and research since November 2004. He was appointed as an Associate Professor in 2013 and was promoted to the rank of Professor in November 2016. Prof. Maitra also served as the Director of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) at Visva-Bharati University from September 2022 to February 2024.


Before joining Visva-Bharati University as a regular faculty member, Prof. Maitra gained valuable research experience working as a Research Associate (UGC) and a DBT Post-Doctoral Fellow from 2000 to 2002 at Visva-Bharati University and the CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Biology.


Throughout his distinguished career, Prof. Maitra has secured research grants from prestigious organizations such as SERB-CRG, DBT, DST, UGC, and NASF (ICAR). He has delivered plenary and invited talks and has acted as Chairperson at various international and national symposiums, seminars, and refresher or orientation courses for college and university teachers. Prof. Maitra has mentored fourteen PhD students, many of whom are well-placed both in India and abroad. Currently, four research scholars are working under his supervision towards their PhD degrees.
 

In addition to his research and teaching responsibilities, Prof. Maitra actively reviews research projects submitted to various funding agencies. He serves as an Associate Editor for Comparative Immunology and Frontiers in Immunology and is a Review Editor for Frontiers in Endocrinology (Experimental Endocrinology).


Prof. Maitra also acts as a reviewer for various high-impact international journals, including Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety, Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology, General and Comparative Endocrinology, Fish Physiology and Biochemistry, Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology, Frontiers in Endocrinology, Environmental Research, Science of the Total Environment, Environmental Pollution, Scientific Reports, Aquaculture and Fisheries, iScience, BBA-Molecular Basis of Life, Environmental Pollution, Journal of Hazardous Materials, and Chemosphere.

  • Transgenerational effect of EDCs on zebrafish

  • Neuroendocrine signalling

  • Reproductive and metabolic toxicology
